ESKIMO ARTISTS. Fieldwork in Alaska, June 1936 until April, 1937
Stuttgart, 1938: Kassel, 1953 (enlarged ed.); Zurich, 1987. 83 pages, 86 photographs, 17 drawings, 1 map. Hard board cover. Item #9695
In 1936 ethnographer Hans Himmelbeber went to Alaska to do fieldwork among the Eskimos of the Kuskowim river and among the Nunivak, in each case studying a culture that was shortly to change forever, but still was almost undisturbed by the influence of the white man. This monograph chronicles his observations of these cultures and their customs, and illustrates much of their material culture: masks, painted drums, ivory figures, carvings, and tools.
