PEOPLES OF THE GOLDEN TRIANGLE

New York: 1984. 300 pages, 712 color and 34 b/w photographs, 7 drawings, 3 maps. Cloth cover, dust jacket chipped, otherwise very good--fine. Item #9569

Simply stated, this is a truly wonderful, beautifully illustrated study of the cultures and crafts of six culturally distinct tribal peoples who occupy an area of northern Thailand known as the Golden Triangle. These people--Karen, Hmong, Mien, Lahu, Akha, and Lisu--numbering about 400,000, eke out a precarious livelihood in a hostile environment and manage to maintain a traditional way of life. In this volume, we see not only the demanding landscape in which these people live, but their ceremonies and rituals, their clothing and ornamentations and the impressive skills they exhibit in crafts such as jewelry, textiles, and basket making.
