The largest and unquestionably the finest assemblage of Igbo art objects outside Nigeria was displayed in a dazzling 1984 exhibition at UCLA. The objects--with the focus on masks--are drawn from 59 collections, and are wonderfully illustrated in the hundreds of photographs (including 40 taken in the field) that graphically delineate the themes most commonly found in the arts of this south-east Nigerian people. The text, written by a noted authority (who also curated the exhibition) and based in a large part on his extensive field research, will unquestionably remain for years to come the definitive work on the art of the Igbo people.
