ART OF THE DOGON. Selections from the Lester Wunderman Collection

New York: 1988. 116 pages, 75 large photographs, 2 maps. Cloth cover. Item #9515

By 1972 Lester Wunderman had assembled what was universally considered to be the world's finest collection of Dogon art. The bulk of this collection has since been given to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which exhibited much of it in 1988. This catalogue of the collection contains a particularly important text that attempts to "... redress the imbalance" in research on the Dogon that began in a series of publications written by Marcel Griaule more than half a century ago. The photographs of the objects are large and excellent, accompanied by full descriptions and interpretations of each object.
