COLUMBIA RIVER BASKETRY, Gifts of Ancestors, Gift of the Earth

Seattle: 1994. xvi, 232 pages, 56 color and 120 b/w photographs, 14 drawings, 1 map. Cloth cover ed. Item #9452

Among the most beautiful and prized examples of Native American basketry are those produced by Indian groups living in the Columbia River region. Surprisingly, there has been considerably little written--relatively speaking--of this rich basketry tradition. In this comprehensive study of this region's rich basketry history, an examination is made of five major forms of traditional basketry: twined root-digging bags, coiled cedar root baskets, folded cedar bark baskets, and flat twined (cornhusk) bags. Excellent photographs, both color and b/w, illustrate hundreds of baskets; the detailed text discusses all aspects of the region's traditional basketry.
