This heavily detailed analysis and examination of the civilization of six states that comprise the Niger Valley contains seven papers (in French)--with 48 contributors to the papers--and over 500 illustrations. In addition to the papers that discuss the ethnology, archaeology, religion, geography, history and natural history, of the region, there are approximately 100 full-page and half-page color photographs of historic objects--principally terra-cotta figures--that have been unearthed in the Niger Valley. This large volume accompanied an exhibition of Niger Valley artifacts that visited nine European and African museums from1993 to 1996.
