The peoples who reside in the forested Maniema region of eastern Zaire share a masking tradition characterized by masks of extraordinary strength and simplicity. This study--certain to become the study of the masks of this area--presents masks of astounding beauty and vitality (all of which were exhibited at Galerie Fred Jahn), about which little has been written and only a few of which have been previously published. The masks of each of 25 groups are presented in full-page, very fine photographs, along with a detailed analysis (the text is in English and German) of each group's art style and sculpture typology.
