Annales du Musee du Congo Belge, Ethnographie, Anthropologie--Serie III, Tome II, Fasicule I. Brussels: 1910. 291 pages of text (many uncut pages) containing 403 photographs and drawings, 2 fold-out maps, and 29 full- page folio-size plates containing 20 color drawings, 15 color plates of raffia designs, 53 photographs of carved figures and objects, and 14 photographs of 18th century Bombala embroidery. Later cloth cover over original wrappers. Item #9141

This renowned, historic study of the Bakuba and Bushongo was the outcome of the authors' 1907-1909 ethnographic expedition. The text, in French, broke new ground; the hundreds of field photos and drawings--with their emphasis on masks, carved figures, dancers, and material culture-offered new insights into these cultures. The 29 plates are a marvel of quality photography and reproduction and compare favorably to anything done today.
