EARTH LINE AND MORNING STAR. NLAKA'PAMUX CLOTHING TRADITION

Canadian Museum of Civilization: 1994. 137 pages, 12 color and 84 b/w photographs, 14 drawings, 1 map. Item #7855

The first in-depth study of the clothing traditions of the Nlaka'pamux (called the Thompson River Indians by early explorers and settlers), a Salish speaking people of the southern British Columbia interior, this work presents a striking panoply of this people's garments from the early 19th century to the present day. Major chapters deal with woven clothing, skin clothing, and adornment, respectively, with attention paid not only to the manufacture of the clothing, but to the feathers, seeds, and shells used for decoration and for images done with dyes and paints that decorated their clothing. The clothing illustrated is from major museum collections, in particular from the Canadian Museum of Civilization.
