RITUAL IN PUEBLO ART, Hopi Life in Hopi Painting

Museum of the American Indian: 1970. vii, 81 pages of text, plus 5 pages of color photographs and 106 pages of b/w photographs. Cloth cover ed. Item #7783

In the 1960s, five young Hopi artists produced, for the Museum of the American Indian, 270 paintings depicting aspects of Hopi life and rituals. Almost half the paintings reflect ritual life, particularly men's ceremonial activity, and ritual is further seen as an aspect of many of the other paintings--with the Kachina Cult predominantly represented. Each of the 186 paintings reproduced in this out of print volume is accompanied by a "description" that contains data and information obtained from the artist, from other informants who viewed the paintings, and from relevant literature on the Hopi. The result is an important volume of Hopi paintings that provides an unusual insight into ritual in Hopi art.
