THE PHOTOGRAPH AND THE AMERICAN INDIAN

Princeton: 1994. xxvi, 334 pages, 304 duotone photographs, 8 color photographs. Cloth cover, 9 1/2" x 12" Item #7746

This is the first major book to present a comprehensive look at photographs of Indians from 1&10 to the present. In addition to the inclusion of a large number of never before published photographs, what makes this work quite unusual is the inclusion by the authors--two Princeton scholars--of a considerable number of photographs by Indians, as early as the 1880s, that provide a unique perspective of the Native American's view of his people. In addition to the more than 300 photographs, the text provides dating of the photographs, biographies of the photographers, and an extensive bibliography.
