THE PAPUAS OF WAROPEN
Koninklijk Institut, The Hague: 1957. xv, 384 pages, 77 photographs, 32 drawings, 2 fold-out maps. Cloth cover. Item #7577
Initially published in Dutch in 1947, this English translation of a work that was the result of long field-work by an expert observer was greeted with great pleasure by those scholars unable to read Dutch. The Waropen, whose villages lie principally on the east coast of Geelvink Bay, had not been the subject of a major ethnographical study prior to the author's field-work in their villages. This ethnographical mono- graph--with major sections on social organization, marriage, rituals, mythology, and material culture--remains the most authoritative work on this people.
