An exhibition of niombo and muzidi figures was presented in 1990 at Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum. Niombo (anthropomorphic funerary figures)and muzidi (smaller figures) found in Sundi province in the Kongo, were encased in huge amounts of cloth and were said to contain small parts of the deceased's body. The exhibited figures--most of which are from Swedish museums--represent the entire corpus of these objects outside of Africa, and are virtually never exhibited. These funerary images are discussed at length in this catalogue of the exhibition--the principal work to have been published on them--which includes many never before seen field photographs taken in the 1920s.
