The dance masks of the Yup'ik people of southwestern Alaska are among the most dramatic and most prized of any maksing tradition. Yup'ik masks from collections from all over the world were assembled for a spectacular exhibitoin for which this was the catalgoue. Wonderful photographs and esssays present the masks and discuss the Yup'ik culture. The text also details the sale of 32 of the 55 of these great masks in the collection of the Museumof the American Indian--masks that would command $100,00--$300,00 in today's market and were sold for $38--$54, each between 1944 and 1969 to expatriate surrealists living in New York, principally through art dealer Julius Carlebach.
