Gordon R. Willey's 1949 magnum opus on Florida Gulf Coast archaeology remains the definitive work on that topic. It is both a field report of unpublished excavations and a compilation and reinterpretation of previous archaeological work in that area. The excavated material consisted of ceramic objects and vessels, pipes and metal, shell and stone objects--much of it seldom seen in galleries and private collections and not often found in museum collections.
