VON KOKOS ZU PLASTIK. Sudsee Kulturen im Wandel

Museum fur Volkerkunde, Berlin: Wissenschaftszentrum, Bonn-Bad Godesberg, 1993. 207 pages, 39 color and 138 b/w photographs, 9 drawings, 4 maps. Item #515

A very interesting and historically important exhibition was held in 1993 and 1994 at the Museum fur Volkerkunde, Berlin and the Wissenschaftszentrum in Bonn-Bad Godesberg, respectively. The cultural change of art in the South Pacific was presented by examining the art of three cultures--the Sissano of PNG, the Maori, and the Chamorro of the Marianas--and relating their art that had been acquired by European museums in the 19th and early 20th centuries to their contemporary art with its traditional influences. The essays (in German) are particularly illuminating--the contributors include the editor, G. Koch, C.B. Wilpert, R. von Gizycki, P. Probst, M. Wronska-Friend. The photographs illustrate this significant exhibition very well.
