THE ARTS OF ZAIRE. Volume I. Southwestern Zaire; Volume II. Eastern Zaire

Berkeley: 1985. Vol. I. xii, 313 pages of text plus 40 pages of photographs: Vol. II. xiii, 314 pages of text containing 1 color and 5 b/w photographs and 10 diagrams, plus 32 pages of photographs. Cloth covers, mint condition. Item #4367

The first volume in a projected five volume comprehensive study of the arts of Zaire focuses on the sculptural traditions of thirty-four populations in southwestern Zaire--including many less familiar groups--with special emphasis on the social and ritual contexts in which the art traditions ocur. The author, one of the preeminent scholars and specialists on the arts of this area, treats each art-producing ethnic group as a discrete unit, and discusses the separate art styles, arranged by areas and ethnic gropups. Volume II of Professor Biebuyck's magnum opus on Zairian art examines the artistic production of eighteen Bantu-speaking ethnic groups located in the eastern Zaire forest and adjoining savanna areas. The first part focuses on the Lega (previously scrutinized in the author's definitive 1973 work on this people, Lega Culture: Art, Initiation and Moral Philosophy among a Central Africa People), while the second part comprises a systematic discussion of the arts and cultures of the Bembe, Nyanga, Mboler, Lengola, and twelve other less familiar groups.
