LES ROIS SCULPTEURS. Legs Pierre Harter. Art et Pouvoir dans le Grass-land Camerounais

Paris: Musee National des Arts d'Afrique et de Oceanie, 1993. 223 pages, 25 color and 112 b/w photographs, 2 drawings. Mint condition. Item #408

The legacy of medical missionary (also ethnologist and art historian) Dr. Pierre Harter, was exhibited in 1993 at the Musee National des Arts d'Afrique et d'Oceanie in Paris. Fifty-three objects from the grasslands, i.e., west Cameroon, in the Musee's collection--selected for aesthetic quality and stylistic diversity--were exhibited. Contained in this catalogue of the exhibition are several essays (in French) that deal with Bamileke and Bamoum styles and the importance of secret societies in the cultures, and a discussion of manufacture, function, and symbolism of the exhibited figures and masks, and--if known--the name and location of the carver. The photographs are many and are very good; full descriptions and data are provided for each illustrated object.
