(Auction Catalogue) Kende Galleries, November 11, 1950. PRIMITIVE ART OF THE LATE FREDERICK KNIZE,
New York, Paris, Vienna. 64 pages, 203 lots auctioned (126 pre-Columbian, 36 African, 19 Oceanic, 18 Eskimo, NW Coast, and American Indian),73 lots illustrated. Forword by Herbert Spinden. Item #15920
The entire collection, except for masks, had been displayed at the Naturhistortiche Hofmuseum, Vienna (the National Ethnological Museum in Vienna) from 1938-1945; many were acquired from Charles Ratton and the Flechteim Galleries, Berlin, also at auction sales liquidating important art collections. The years of the exhibition coincide with Germany's "invitation/occupation" of Austria during the entire years of World War II. The acquisition "...at auction slaes liquidating important collections" evokes a chilling reminder of the fate of many of the collectors and their art collections in the period prior to and during World War II.
