Most of the lots were from early collections of primitive art. 81 lots, however were from the famed collection of Tristan Tzara, one of the founding artists of the Dada movement, who began to collect African art at the age of 20, and collected until his death in 1963. Most of the pieces in his collection were acquired in the 1920s and 1930s from the galleries of the already luminous dealers throughout the Continent, but principally in the shops of dealers in France who in later years would be accorded "legendary" status.
