AGAYUT. Nunivak Eskimo Masks and Drawings from the 5th Thule Expedition 1921-24 Collected by Knud Rasmussen

Report of the 5th Thule Expedition, Vol. X, Part 4. Copenhangen: 1988. 375 pages (text in English and Danish), 13 full-page color and 18 full-page and half-page b/w photographs, 95 drawings--all illustrations of masks and drawings collected by Rasmussen during his 1924 visit to Nome. Item #1344

This volume was published more than sixty years after Knud Rasmussen's 1924 visit to Nome, at which time he acquired 28 painted wooden masks and several other wooden items and a large number of drawings of masks, shaman masks, hunting scenes, and tools form Nunivak islanders who were visiting Nome. This work presents for the first time Rasmussen's two collections of masks and drawings, together with the information he received about the masks' significance in the Nunivak universe. In the accompanying text the author discusses the masks' ceremonial and spiritual importance. The text is in both English and Danish.
