SMOKY-TOP. The Art and Times of Willie Seaweed

Seattle: 1983. 184pages, 185 large b/w photographs and 21 full-page and half-page color photographs. Cloth cover. Item #1280

The patriarch of 20th century Blunden Harbour artists, the prolific, brilliant Kwakiutl carver, Willie Seaweed, was given a posthumus showing at the Thomas Burke Memorial Museum of 120 examples of his work garnered from museum and private collectors in the U.S. and Canada. During his lifetime, Willie Seaweed carved almost every kind of ceremonial object in use by his people: masks, headdresses, singer's batons, and great memorial totem poles. His simple, elegant carvings, done in an highly personal style, are handsomely presented in the fine photographs, and are accompanied by an especially fine text by Bill Holm that documents Seaweed's remarkable fifty year career as a carver.
