Norman: 1991. XVII, 196 pages, 108 color and 28 b/w photographs. Soft cover. Item #12246

A volume of great importance, this is the first systematic study of the late 19th century Hispanic religious images, or santos, made in New Mexico and Colorado for the Brotherhood of Our Father Jesus Nazarene (Penitentes). In Part 1, the origins and importance of the penitental practices of the Brotherhood are traced; in Part 2, the ritual and social functions of the Brotherhood are described. A catalogue of the santos in the Taylor Museum--one of the great collections of this material--is fully presented and illustrated in splendid photographs.
