The Tanala, occupants of a wooded and mountainous region in the southern third of the eastern part of Madagascar, had, at the time of this more than sixty year old paper, a culture that was considered to be the most ancient of any of the Madagascar tribes. This thorough ethnographic study remains one of the major treatises on this people and examines all aspects of their culture, with particular emphasis on their religion, social organization and material culture.
