CHILDREN OF COTTONWOOD. Piety and Ceremonialism in Hopi Indian Puppetry.

Lincoln: 1987. IX, 412 pages, 23 full-page and half-page drawings of ceremonies and performances, 1 map. Cloth cover. Item #1137

This remarkable volume presents a collection of texts unique among ethnological studies of the Hopi, and is one of only a handful of original full-length texts. These texts explain behind-the-scenes activities during ceremonial events and the meaning of ritual action patterns, and reveal the inner realm of Hopi religious mentality in its own language. The translation of these texts took six years. The drawings were done by Warren Namingh and Paul Norbo.
