Almost all of the Field Museum's 5,000 unbroken specimens of painted Anasazi pottery were acquired during the 1880s and 1890s, and remained unclassified until 1939. After that classification was completed, approximately 900 vessels, illustrating most of the major types from this splendid collection, were selected for inclusion in this study of the collection. All appear in photographs, along with descriptions and collection data for each pot.
