ANCIENT ART OF THE AMERICAN WOODLAND INDIANS

Detroit Institute of the Arts, 1985. 240 pages, 52 color and 132 b/w photographs, 3 maps. Item #11040

The prehistoric art and artifacts of Indians who lived in the area stretching from the Atlantic to the edge of the Plains and from the Great Lakes to the gulf of Mexico were exhibited in 1985 and 1986 at three museums. This material, very seldom published (some of it never published) and even less seldom exhibited, is stunningly beautiful and ranges from objects that are elegantly simple to those that are strikingly complex. The nearly 200 photographs and lively, scholarly text in this catalogue of the exhibition document the great power and beauty ofthese pieces.
