This splendid study of the magnificent terracotta sculpture of the Nok summarizes all that was known of these ancient figures from the time that the first finds of the terracottas were recognized in 1942, up till 1976. Few of these sculptures, dating from as far back as the 6th century B.C. and up through about the 4th century A.D., had ever been exhibited outside Nigeria, and less than a score had been published in books. Now in the National Museum, Lagos, these lovely terracottas are illustrated in very good photographs that accompany the excellent text.
