PLAINS INDIAN SCULPTURE, A Traditional Art from America's Heartland

Washington, D.C. 1986. 239 pages, 26 color and 208 b/w photographs, 11 drawings, 1 map. Cloth cover with dust jacket. Item #9413

The first comprehensive book on the three dimensional carvings of Plains Indians, this long overdue study documents changes in style and subject matter, and, where possible, identifies carvings by the names of the carvers as well as by their tribes. Much more common after the tribes acquired metal tools, these Plains Indian carvings--mostly in miniature and generally carved from catlinite--were usually made for trade, though some were used in traditional ceremonies and activities. The text, by the noted Plains authority, is accompanied by over 200 excellent photographs.
